Green Dragon 4 Plants - Arisaema dracontium -Wildflower

The unusual foliage of Green Dragon plants will be an exotic & excellent addition to the shade garden. This plant grows up to 4 feet tall with a single highly dissected leaf. Green Dragon seeds are in a shiny cluster of bright orange red fruit in the fall. In the wild the delightfully unusual flowers of wild Green Dragon bloom in April, May, June, and July in moist shade along rocky slopes in woods, ravines, and along bluffs. In the flower garden it is best grown in humusy, medium to wet, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. Green Dragon does best in constantly moist soil rich in organic matter and does poorly in heavy clay soils. This native wildflower is somewhat uncommon and should be left alone in the wild. Arisaema dracontium Green Dragon is similar to Jack-in-the pulpit, except green dragon usually has only one large, compound leaf divided into 7-15 lance-shaped leaflets and has a greenish spadix which is narrower and tapers up and beyond the less prominent, greenish hood (lacks the distinctive purple striping of Jack) of the spathe. Green Dragon and Jack-in-the-Pulpit plants go dormant in the summer, with the mature plants producing red berries visible in mid to late summer. Roots contain calcium oxalate and are poisonous in an uncooked state. Arisaema dracontium Green Dragon is an interesting native spring wildflower for the shady woodland garden, wild garden or native plant garden and grows well in moist conditions along streams or ponds. Combine with other shade loving native wildflower that will continue to fill the space in summer when these plants go dormant.

The flowers are a few inches wide and very intensely colored, ranging from white to pink to rose and magenta shades.Dierama was first collected in South Africa by the Victorian plant explorer Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, who brought it back to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.
