Tree Fern
my tree fern leaves have gone brown over the winter, should i cut them back or leave them?

Take them off, they are going to fall off sooner or later and they look unsightly anyway.

Tree Fern Totem - 18 inch
USD 9.65

Tree fern totems are great additions to your options for mounting orchids. Ours are 2" wide, 2" thick and 18" tall, not the thinner versions found elsewhere. We like them for oncidiums and other orchids that like climbing, as they do in trees. The totem is either hung or attached to a surface with wire or other material. It can also be placed into a well weighted pot like our beautiful ceramic orchid pots. Simply anchor the totem in the pot and position the orchid touching the totem. Any of our heavy stone media can be used as a base in the pot, with or without a top layer of mix or media. You can also use a temporary attachment like our 6" paper ties to "connect" the orchid to the totem. The orchid will work its roots into the tree fern material and think it is back home in the wild.

FERN: A fern is any one of a group of about 12,000 species of plants. Unlike mosses they have xylem and phloem (making them vascular plants). They have stems, leaves, and roots like other vascular plants. Ferns do not have either seeds or flowers (they reproduce via spores). Australian Tree Fern (Cyathea cooperi) This huge growing tree fern forms trunks 6' thick and can grow 30' high. The fronds can grow 8 feet long. The plant can stand temperatures down to 23 F, however, there is some leaf damage at 27 F. The plant needs semi-shade for optimum growth and plenty of water. Hardy in Zones 8-11. Excellent house plant or patio plant.

Blue Jacaranda Tree 20 Seeds - Tropical
USD 1.29

The jacaranda is a large deciduous tree with finely textured, fern-like pinnate leaves. Young trees are upright but assume an irregular branching pattern that produces beautifully asymmetric open crowns as the trees age. From April to June, the tree covers itself with showy, trumpet-shaped flowers that are about 1.5 inches wide and arranged in panicles (pyramid shaped clusters) that grow at the tips of branches. Jacaranda mimosifolia, the species most often seen in Florida, is native to the Amazon River basin countries of Brazil, Argentina, and Peru. Jacaranda prefers enriched, sandy, well drained soils but is tolerant of most soil types. This is not a salt-tolerant plant.Light: Bright, sunny conditions are preferred. This tree will tolerate some shade but will bear fewer flowers. Moisture: Likes moisture but will tolerate some drought. Doesn't like soggy or poorly drained environments.Hardiness: USDA Zones 9 - 11. Propagation: By seed. Selected varieties are grafted. May also be cut from half-ripened wood (treat with rooting hormone). Most jacarandas reach very sizable proportions and are unsuitable for small properties. Occasionally, certain species or selected varieties are available that are smaller in stature and can be enjoyed in suburban yards and for patio plantings--check with your nursery. Since this is a deciduous tree, it is best planted among evergreens that will hide its bareness in the winter and provide a green backdrop for the vibrant flowers in the spring. This tree is especially impressive when reflected in the still waters of a lake or pond. The jacaranda boasts some of the most electric and intense colors that nature has to offer--I love the vibrant blues, violets and purples that are the hallmark of this genus. The fact that the tree stays in bloom for more that 8 weeks makes it even more desirable. Jacaranda also make an excellent bonsai!

Staghorn Fern in Basket
USD 14.95

Staghorn Fern in Basket Platycerium bifurcatum The staghorn fern is an epiphyte, which is normally found growing on the side of trees in its native habitat. The generic name Platycerium comes from the Greek word meaning "broad horn". These plants are grown for their attractive antler-like fronds (leaves). The plant bears 2 types of fronds; the sterile fronds, which are flat, round and located at the base of the fern and the fertile fronds, which are irregular, lobed and usually ascending from the plant. Spores appear as brownish masses on the tips of the antler-like fertile fronds. Staghorn ferns grow best in a high temperature, 60-80°F or higher and will tolerate a low temperature of 50°F. Will grow very well in the low humidity conditions of the average home. Our Staghorn Ferns are growing in 4-inch cedar baskets containing sphagnum moss. Suggest the basket be hung as the fern grows QUICKLY and will hang down. Wire hanger not supplied. Most buyers are using a metal coat hanger and bending it for their particular setting. The basket has eyes on it for the hanger. 12-14 inch leaf-span on fern -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis)
USD 12.00

Royal ferns with their very long fronds and lance-shaped leaves resembling the leaves a locust tree. It spreads slowly, like other Osmundas, but individual plants remain. After many years large stands will be in place around a large central plant. At the edge of our pond they form little islands going into the water. The ferns prefer open shade and highly acid, very wet soil. Plants in the Florida wetlands are tree-like and quite impressive. Divide in spring, planting the crowns just at the soil level. Royal ferns do well under the proper garden conditions. Use them as tall accents in the bog garden. Zone 3-10

USD 1.79

*GROWN ON OUR FARM HERE IN TENNESSEE* Although the fern can look like a tangle of antlers at first, on closer inspection one can see the impressive 'nest' frond which can be 1m across at maturity. This 'nest' frond is designed to collect falling leaves and insects. These give the fern a valuable source of potassium and calcium, nutrients required for the production of their large fronds. It is from this frond that the fern attaches itself to the host tree. It protectively wraps around the rhizome and short roots, clasping onto the furrows in the bark with root like structures. Staghorn ferns are epiphytic perennials or "air" plants. Staghorns are native to jungles in Africa, Madagascar, Australia, Tropical Asia and one species (Andinum) is from South America, Peru and Bolivia..!!! The Staghorn Fern is very common in cultivation, and is regarded as one of the world's most spectacular ferns! (These are not terrestrial plants (growing by rooting in the ground) but rather they are like orchids, they are Epiphytes. They grow in the crook of a branch of a tree. They do not put roots into the host, they are not parasites. They only live on the other plant, taking nourishment from the dropping, decaying leaves/insects of the host plant.)
