Tree Distinctive
Mystery Tree!?
I have these two "Trees" growing by my fenceline and I have no Idea what they are. Theyre currentley about 15 Feet Tall with central trunks about 8 inches in diameter a greyish brown smooth leathery bark. Probley the most distinctive feature of the trees is their foliage and fall shed. The leaves were kind of a shallow cresent deep shiny green about 8 inches long 2-3 inches wide they turned brown and fell off then about a week to two weeks after the leaves fell their "sticks" fell off all about 2 feet long and skinnier than a pencil and slightly flexible... I'm baffeled and couldnt find it in my tree ID books which makes me think its a fast growing garbage tree I've only lived here since September. I live in northern Illinois.
They sound like they could possibly be a willow or type of illow hybrid gaining popularity because of it's fast growth. You can find out a bit more information about willow hybrids here: (with pictures):

Another possibility is that it is a Butternut. They also have compound leaves that fall off the stem and then the stem falls Your trees are young yet, so the bark will not have started the cracking process yet, possibly closer to the ground though. More information here:

20 Possumhaw Holly Tree Seeds
USD 1.99 This native North American tree can become a 20-foot-tall tree when planted in partial shade. Although the 2 to 3-inch-long, dark green leaves are deciduous they do not present any appreciable fall color change. Plants can develop many stems arising from the ground creating dense thickets. However, lower branches are often removed to form a small tree with a tight head of foliage along the outer portion of the crown. Interior leaves are often shaded out and drop from the tree. If lower branches are not removed, the plant develops into a large, spreading mound of foliage reaching to the ground. This plant is considered mostly allergy free and causes little or no allergy problems in most people. Berries: Possumhaw starts to make berries in the summer which turn color in the fall. Blackgum Sourgum Black Tupelo Tree 10 Seeds -Shrub/Tree
USD 2.99 The sour gum is outstanding in early fall when its 2- to 5-inch shiny green leaves take on warm tones of orange and red. One of the few deciduous trees that have autumn color in mild climates, it is also valuable in wet, swampy areas where few other trees survive. The sour gum grows from 5-6 feet to about 20 feet in 10-15 years, usually reaching 30 to 50 feet with a spread equal to half its height. Young trees have a conical shape, but older ones become irregular and flat-topped; young or old, they have distinctive horizontal branches that dip slightly at the tips. This is apparent throughout the year but is especially effective in winter after the leaves have fallen. In early summer sour gums bear tiny greenish yellow male and female flowers on separate trees. If trees of both sexes happen to be near one another, the flowers on the female trees are followed in early fall by clusters of 1/2-inch blue-black fruit, which are not very tasty to humans but are eagerly eaten by birds. The sour gum has notably pest-free foliage and even succeeds in seaside gardens if protected from wind. How To Grow Sour Gum The sour gum is hardy to Zone 3. It does best in full sun and moist acid soil (pH 5.5 to 6.5) but tolerates light shade and ordinary garden soil provided it is watered deeply during dry weather.
