Can you help me devise some elaborate traps for D&D?
I'm the regular DM for my group, and the players tend towards the "Kick in the door" style of play. There's usually lots of bloody combat, which is fun most of the time. However, for the next adventure, I'd like to test their wit and resolve, so I want to include some very elaborate, complicated traps that can't just be disengaged with a simple skill check. If anyone's seen Indiana Jones 3 (Last Crusade), I'm talking about stuff like at the end, where Indi faces the three challenges before finding the grail. That sort of thing. So, if you've got any traps (or puzzles, non-deadly but complicated puzzles work too) of Your Own you wouldn't mind sharing, or if you can point me in the direction of some free source material, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
A nasty trap I devised for kitd types was when they open the door and (apparently) see a group of monsters about 30' or so ahead of them in a room. What they don't realize is they are looking into an alcove with an angled mirror about 5' ahead of them backed by a solid wall and the main room opens to the side. It's especially a hoot if a wizardly type hurls a fireball into the 'room', which smashes thru the mirror and impacts against the wall, catching at least a few of the party in the back-blast. Only slightly less gratifying is describing how the raging barbarian charges into the mirror cutting himself up just before he brains himself on the wall. What's nice about it is that it's immediately bypassible for groups with a minimum of caution or forethought but catches the impulsive types every time.
