Shade Perennial

Shade Perennial
How to plant a Perennial Garden?

I live in MA and am planting a perennial garden. My soil is good and moist and has some shade and full sun. So far I have -Forget me nots, lilies, snow in the summer, dianthicus.
I am just wondering what are some easy to care for and pretty perennials? Also do I need to mulch and take the mulch away in the spring?

Remember that a perennial garden is just that perennial. Don't put in too much, start slow. Things will spread and grow larger with time and the most common mistake when you start is to put in too much. It won't be filled up the first couple of years, you can fill in the empty spaces with annuals. Try to get plants that bloom at different times of the year early and late spring, early mid and late summer and fall. Put larger taller plants to the back.
Mulch is critical. It does many good things. It retains water. It keeps weeds down and with time it enriches the soil. The mulch breaks down and becomes compost. It protects plants through the winter. In fall pile on the mulch, particularly on and around delicate plants. In spring wait until most danger of frost to remove the mulch. If you use leaves, you have to pull them back to allow little plants to come up. If you shred the leaves you can mostly leave it on. When you pull the leaves back, leave them nearby if danger of frost cover the plants again.
I will repeat the most important thing is to leave room for your plants to grow. Enjoy it is a wonderful thing that grows through the years, it truly takes 4 or 5 years to really get nice.

Using the comprehensive plant-selection tables, gardeners can see at a glance the most important characteristics of more than 1,300 annuals and perennials, helping them make the best choice for their garden's appearance and cultivation requirements. The first part of Annuals and Perennials is the plant tables, which are organized by species name and list the plant's characteristics. These are: Height and spread Perennial, biennial or annual Full sun, half-sun, heavy shade Cool, warm-temperate, subtropical or tropical Flowering and planting season Showy foliage, showy flowers, scented flowers Frost tolerance Bromeliad, carnivorous, gesneriad or none of these Suitability to container planting Indoor use Having chosen a plant from the table, the gardener then turns to the book's second part, which describes the more than 1,300 species, cultivars and hybrids in greater detail. This includes growing zones and common names, as well as the plants' origins, color variations, growth habit (whether, for example, the plant spreads rapidly), propagation techniques, recommended uses, problem parasites or diseases, and extra cultivation notes. Color photographs illustrate a select number of plants. Perennials and annuals play an important role in the garden. They can provide season-long, even yearlong, greenery and blooms. Lilyturf 10 Seeds- Liriope muscari - Shade Perennial
USD 3.99

Liriope, also commonly called border grass is not actually a grass but a member of the lily family, a fact that inspires another of its common names, lilyturf. The dark green, ribbonlike foliage grows in length from 10 to 18 in (25-46 cm) and then recurves toward the ground to form rounded clumps. As the clumps mature they merge into a continuous carpet that resembles a plot of shaggy lawn grass. In summer, spikes of small purple, violet or white flowers rise from the center of clumps. Flowers are followed by pea-sized black or white berries in autumn. Liriope spreads quite fast in reasonable soil, creating a substantial tuberous root mass. The plant itself is similar in appearance and landscape use to mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus) which has finer textured foliage and bears its flowers within the clumps rather than above it like liriope. Culture Becomes established most rapidly in well worked, fertile soil, but is tolerant of much less than ideal conditions. This plant is a true survivor and will grow almost anywhere! Light: Sun to shade. Moisture: Average. Hardiness: USDA Zones 7-11. Propagation: Divide clumps into whatever size you like from a few leaves to large chunks. Liriope transplants easily at any time of year. The blue-black berries easily germinate, but divisions are easier and quicker
