David's Texas Native Grass Buffalograss 1 Pound per Order
USD 39.95

A native, warm-season, perennial sod-forming grass with creeping stolons which root at the leafy nodes. Stems are 4-10 inches tall; leaves fine and abundant. The male and the female plants grow in separate colonies; female plants bear seed in bur-like clusters among the leaves and male plants have a 2-3 spiked flag-like seed head. Produces seed throughout the year and spreads by seeds and surface runners. This grass is readily used in both native pasture and lawn plantings. Photo courtesy of South Texas Natives Growing: Buffalo grass loves to grow in warm soil, so you should plant your seeds in late spring (April-May) when the soil temperature is between 60 and 80 degrees. The general rule of thumb when planting buffalo grass seeds is to use approximately 3 lbs. of seeds per 1,000 square ft. Place the seeds between ¼-inch and ½-inch below the surface. You will need to water the seeds during establishment to encourage proper germination. Water the grass every day the first week, but scale back to every other day or every third day the next 2 weeks. This will aid the seeds in battling the warmer, drier temperatures later in the summer. Lot Number: 31021TARC

RARE Hokkaido Black Watermelon 10 Seed-$6,100 per Fruit
USD 18.99

TOKYO A jumbo black watermelon auctioned in Japan on Friday fetched a record $6,100, making it one of the most expensive watermelons ever sold in the country. In a society where melons are a luxury item commonly given as gifts, the watermelon's hefty price tag followed another jaw-dropping auction last month. At that auction, a pair of "Yubari" cantaloupe melons sold for a record $23,500. The 17-pound, black-skinned "Densuke" watermelon, a variety grown only on the northern island of Hokkaido, was purchased Friday by a marine products dealer who said he wanted to support local agriculture, according to Kyodo News agency. The price was the highest on record for a Densuke watermelon, said Kazuyoshi Ohira, a spokesman for the Tohma Agricultural Cooperative in Hokkaido. Most retail at department stores and supermarkets for a more modest $188 to $283, Ohira said. And what makes a watermelon worth $200, much less $6,000 Ohira says it's the unusual black skin and unparalleled taste. "It's a watermelon, but it's not the same," he said.

David's Herb Basil Mrs. Burns' Lemon 100 Seeds per Packet
USD 5.95

Mrs. Burns' Lemon Basil is nothing short of an idol among fine chefs and gardeners alike! This heirloom was discovered in New Mexico, and it is absolutely the best lemon basil available anywhere, with larger leaves and a much more intense, citrusy, mouth-puckering flavor! This heat-loving plant sets 2 1/2-inch leaves of dark green on plants 18 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 24 inches wide. A great choice for containers as well as the herb or vegetable garden, it is aromatic and very pest and disease resistant. Strongly recommended for anyone who values strong fragrance and flavor. Heirloom. Seeds which have been saved over many years and passed down, in original form, from generation to generation. Sow seeds outdoors 1 to 2 weeks after last spring frost, or begin indoors 6 to 8 weeks before transplant date. It germinates in 5 to 15 days. Thin when seedlings are 2 inches tall. Pinch the central stem of the plant back several times during growth to encourage the production of side shoots. Lean soils in a sunny location will produce more flavorful oils, but it will tolerate partial sun. Be sure to grow some on a sunny indoor windowsill for fresh herbs just steps away from your cooking. It's also a bit more heat tolerant than Sweet Basil, a plus for gardens in the South. It produces small terminal racemes of pink flowers, but you'll want to keep them pinched back to promote dense, bushy growth and focus the plant's energy on producing aromatic oil instead of flowers.

RARE Yubari King Melon 10 Seeds -$12,000 per Fruit
USD 1.95

TOKYO A remarkably sweet canteloupe auctioned in Japan fetched a record $12,000, making it one of the most expensive canteloupes ever sold in the country. In a society where melons are a luxury item commonly given as gifts the jaw-dropping auction last month shocked everyone! At that auction, a pair of "Yubari" cantaloupe melons sold for a record $23,500. A pair of cantaloupes from the bankrupt city of Yubari, Hokkaido, fetched a whopping 2 million yen at the first auction of the season at the Sapporo central wholesale market, the Japan Agricultural Cooperative's Yubari unit said. The price paid by Marui Imai Inc., a Sapporo-based department store, for the upmarket produce surpassed the previous record of 800,000 yen for two cantaloupes, JA Yubari said. "Perhaps the city's designation as a financially rehabilitating entity ironically helped generate an advertising effect," said a spokesperson for the former coal town, which went bankrupt last year. "This will encourage the city a lot." The two melons were put on display at Marui Imai's flagship outlet priced at 1 million yen apiece. Yoshikazu Hoshino, 59, a purchasing officer at the department store, said the cantaloupes were more for publicity than profit. "We were bullish in the bidding because we're celebrating our 135th anniversary this year. We wanted as many customers as possible to see them," he said. One of the million-yen fruits has already been sold, the store said. Other shoppers were stunned by the price. "It's not a price I can afford," said Ryoko Hino, a 79-year-old shopper.
