Royal Empress

Royal Empress
What trees are suitable for landscaping a street/swale in zone 10?

My community was alloted a budget to line our avenue with trees. The city gave us a choice between silver buttonwoods and geigers. I don't like either because they are prone to diseases. Trees have to be Medium Size because of the overhead powerlines. I have looked at Royal Empress and Newport Flowering Plum. Any suggestions? (miami, FL- zone 10)

ok. if you mean the royal empress which is the fast Growing Tree, then no. because it is said to get 60 feet and that is way taller than power lines. also fast trees are maybe less strong than slow ones due to the fibers get formed so fast and are not dense.

ok and now i see the flowering plum you are talking about is the same type..but shorter and prettier. the heighth looks alright but i am guessing it will make dark colored fruit with pits that will drop to the sidewalks and onto cars. bumpy for walking plus stains.

a good thing to look for on street trees is lack of undesirable debris drop. and lack shallow roots that break concrete. and ones that can survive in compacted soil. and then maybe ones that live a long time.

here is a page that has Florida's tree selector:

http://www.extension.org/pages/Trees_and_Shrubs:_Selection

cities and such often make tree selectors to help with finding trees to fit certain purposes; here are pages with more links of interest to that effect:

http://www.treesvirginia.org/Links.htm

http://www.fw.vt.edu/dendro/dendrology/links.htm

and misc selectors:

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=city+tree+selector&ei=utf-8&fr=b1ie7

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=florida+tree+selector&ei=utf-8&fr=b1ie7

and a couple of tree forums which will have informational documents and also forums for discussion:

http://www.arboristsite.com/

http://forums.arborday.org/forum/index.php

http://www.treeworld.info/

one thing that can be overlooked is soil requirements. like a tree may be native to acidic mountains but Florida may be alkaline sand<

maybe consider whether you want all the same type of trees. yes it is the way many plantings are but also if they were varied..well it would be varied. and also varied plantings guard against mass kill from disease and mass pest infestation/breeding ground.

also consider fruit. yes debris fall is bad but free food is good and also quite convenient if u are walking home from school.

if you have any input after selection time, like for planting time, try to get the holes to be well dug and fortified. lack of large holes now will later mean compacted soil to the full grown tree. the tree finds it's self in a little water basin that is what leads to disease. i.e. a three foot hole looks Very Sweet for a tree which is a sapling but three feet is not much to the tree that you want to occupy that space.
