ORANGE BIRD OF PARADISE STRELITZIA REGINAE BULK 1000 seeds
USD 161.00

Strelitzia reginae is a bold structural plant, which forms large evergreen clumps of stiff leaves growing up from the base. The grey-green banana-like leaves grow about 5' in height and the flowers stand above the foliage at the tips of long stalks. Mature plants are very floriferous with flowers in autumn, winter and spring. Strelitzia reginae is an easy plant to grow in the garden. Plants do well in full sun to semi-shade, love a rich loamy soil and plenty of water throughout the year. They respond well to regular feeding with a slow release fertilizer and compost. They are however very tolerant plants and will thrive in most soils and can survive with very little water once established. The plants are also wind resistant and grow well in coastal gardens. Strelitzias are sensitive to cold and would need a sheltered position in areas with frost as the flowers and leaves are often damaged by frost. In very cold climates it is better to grow them in pots that could be moved indoors when freezing temperatures are expected. Hardy zone 10-11

USD 8.95

'Mandela's Gold' Bird of Paradise is a yellow variant of Strelitzia reginae This work was done by John Winter, the curator of the botanical gardens at Kirstenbosch in Cape Town, South Africa. In 1994, there was sufficient stock of seeds to grow the plant commercially. Originally, the name Strelitzia reginae 'Kirstenbosch Gold' was awarded but was later changed Strelitzia reginae 'Mandela's Gold' in honor of Nelson Mandela. Will grow up to 4 foot tall, and is hardy to 20 - 25 degrees or zone 9 and above. Ideal conditions are full sun, rich, well-drained loam soil with a pH of approximately 7.5, regular deep watering in summer and liberal applications of fertilizer in early summer. May be grown indoors or out. Related to Heliconias and Bananas, the Yellow Bird of Paradise looks similar to the orange form, but it slightly smaller. It blooms throughout the year in mild climates. The tall flower stalks rise above the foliage, with a beak-like spathe growing outward, about 6 inches in length. The bright yellow sepals spread out to invite birds to perch on the blue petals, which contain nectar. The blooms make very long lasting cut flowers. This sale item is a starter plant about 4-6 inches tall and is actively growing in a 2.5-inch pot. Checkout our other items, we also stock the Orange and White varieties of Bird of Paradise.
