Purple Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia Capillaris) - Purple Muhly grass, with Latin name Muhlenbergia capillaries, is a type of ornamental grass that grows in various areas across the United States although it is native to Texas. Blue/green needle like foliage, giving it a stiff upright growth habit, and can get 3 - 4 feet in height and a 2 - 3 foot spread. A real show in the fall with flowers that look like a purple cloud from far away, giving a spectacular fall color show. Grows in drought conditions as well as wet conditions. It is one of the top choices when choosing ornamental grasses for landscaping due to its beautiful purple blooms, which are billowing and delicate. Purple muhly grass is the most common type of this ornamental grass, and the purplish tinge is a wonderful addition to any landscape. Purple muhly grass prefers to be grown in full sun. Make sure that you plant the ornamental grass seeds in an area where it will be able to get at least six to eight hours of sunlight. Purple muhly ornamental grass can also tolerate partial shade, however, dense shade is not an option. Purple muhly grass grows best in fertile, organic soil. If ever you are planting in clay, sandy soil, or other poor conditions for your soil, you can add a healthy dose of organic matter for the muhly grass to grow better. You can also check the pH level of the soil and make sure it is between the range of 5.5 to 6.8. This clumping grass puts out a purple/pink cloud of dense flower heads that add a lovely spot of color to the garden for six to 8 weeks in late summer. The formal name is Muhlenbergia capillaris, but most folks call it Muhly grass. It can grow to three feet high in a clump three feet wide. It's hardy in zones 6-10. Established plantings can be drought tolerant. Prefers full sun to light shade. Can tolerate most soil conditions. It's used in borders and perennial gardens. Makes an excellent ground cover for areas with poor soils. But you can also grow it as a pot plant, in a sunny indoor location or on a patio.
