Particle size should be large enough that the soil retains the water that occupies the layer of saturated soil at the bottom of the container. Most potting soils are loaded with fillers like composted bark, wood chips, sand and other materials that hold no nutritional or aeration properties. Plants that are grown in old decomposing potting soil tend to be much weaker then plants that are grown in Happy Harvest Professional Potting Soil. We took a bag of store bought potting soil we will call MG. We used a ΒΌ screen to separate the soil to see the amount of fillers used. We were very surprised at the amount of useless material they were charging money for. Have a look for yourself. We also tested the pH on MG and it was consistently 9.0 and higher. This is nearly toxic for some plants. The pH on Happy Harvest is 6.5 to 7.5. This is expectable for almost all plants.
