How long is the recovery time for a tibia-fibula break with surgery?
I fell off my horse and hit my leg on a cement planter and broke clear through the tibia and fibula. Had surgery with plates and screws. The break is clean and near my ankle. I have been in a cast for 6 weeks, staples removed, and now I am in a boot. Still cannot put any weight on it for a total of 12 weeks. I will see my doctor March 18 and I am hopeful to start therapy and walking on it. Has anyone had this injury and will I be able to stand on it at the 12 week mark??? Please help b/c I cant walk yet and I'm going CRAZY!!
I know exactly what you are going through as I was hit by a drunk driver back in October of 2008. It shattered my right tibia and fractured my right fibula clean through and I had a steel rod inserted into my tibia with screws to hold it in place. I also shattered my left femur, broke my left knee and lost some toes on my left foot. Luckily, because I was completely bed bound I wasn't required to wear a cast or a leg brace, but I do know what it is like to not be weight bearing. I do have good news though, I was able to weight bear at the 12 week mark on my right leg (which is the leg with the similar injuries to yours). The only thing that I would caution against is that it depends on what the doctor sees in the x-ray. He wants to make sure that your leg has begun healing solidly enough that bearing weight on it won't cause any problems to the hardware in your leg or the bone itself.
I was doing physical therapy before the 12 week mark, but it got serious with weights and resistance bands and other things after I was able to weight bear. The other good news is that within three months, I was full weight bearing, walking on my right leg and able to devote all of my attention to my left leg. Hopefully with only one leg being injured, your timeline will be even quicker as far as the walking and healing than mine was! Good luck and keep those spirits up, it seems like a long time, but it will be over with before you know it.
