Ready to Plant: A live PINCUSHION Protea Plant from Maui, Hawaii ---in 3.5 inch pot
USD 39.95

The stunning Hawaiian Protea plant is unlike any tropical flower you've ever seen. So exotic and unusual, it was named after a Greek god, Proteus, who could change his physical appearance on a whim. Today, there are over 1400 varieties of Protea with different sizes, shapes, textures and colors. Protea flowers keep unusually long as cut flowers (10-14 days) and are ideal for flower baskets. Hung upside down, they dry beautifully, and are often made into wreaths. Dried, they can last for years. In landscaping: In frost-free regions of the United States, proteas may be planted directly into the ground, making sure your soil is very well drained. Soil pH should be between 5.0 and 6.5. Plant your protea starters in full sun, water regularly---once or twice a week---for the first twelve months. You may expect your first protea blooms in 18-24 months after planting. In a container: Transplant into a one-gallon container with a soil mixture of 1/3 sand, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 redwood shavings or peat moss. Place container in full sun and water once or twice a week in the warm growing months. Fertilize after six months. When the first sign of frost is apparent, move your protea plant into a sheltered environment. When moving indoors, place your plant in the warmest sun exposure possible. Keep plant away from direct heat (heaters, fireplaces, etc.) As soon as weather permits, place your protea plant outside. After growing your plant in a one gallon container for 6-8 months, transplant into a 5-gallon container and repeat the above steps. After approximately 12 months in a 5-gallon container, start to look for your exotic protea to bloom. Flower buds appear in the late fall or early winter.

LEUCOSPERMUM BOLUSII Gordon's bay pincushion 5 seeds
USD 3.00

The Gordon's Bay pincushion is quite unusual for a pincushion in that its flowers are a creamy white colour where they are normally a striking orange or yellow. It is also an easy one to grow, and it is a good cutflower. Leucospermum bolusii grows into a rounded shrub, about 1.5 m tall. The leaves are hairy when young, and have one apical tooth. The flowerheads are flat and rounded, about 20 mm in diameter, each one made up of 50 - 100 small tubular flowers. The buds are encased by pinkish red bracts, and the flowers are creamy white, with a strong, sweet fragrance that is very noticeable on windless evenings. Flowering time is spring to midsummer (September to December), peaking in late October to early November. The nut-like seeds drop out of the flowers about two months after flowering.

LEUCOSPERMUM CORDIFOLIUM Pincushion Protea 5 seeds
USD 3.00

Leucospermum cordifolium is a rounded spreading shrub up to 6' in diameter and about 5' high, with a single main stem and horizontally spreading stems, hard green leaves and 1 to 3 large inflorescences borne at the end on the stem. The inflorescences consist of a large number of small flowers. It is the stiff protruding styles of the flowers which are the source of the common name "pincushion" for this genus. Only a few large, hard, nut-like seeds are produced by each inflorescence. In their natural environment the seeds are collected by ants, stored in the soil, and germinate only after a fire has killed the mature plants and returned the nutrients back to the soil. Sow in Fall Hardiness: Zones 9-11
