Many different cultivars of this maple have been selected and they are grown worldwide for their attractive leaf shapes and colors. They are highly sought after and are relatively costly trees given their size. Acer palmatum or Japanese Maple is a small deciduous tree of rounded or pyramidal habit prized for their fall colors. At maturity they can reach 15 to 25 feet, growing faster when young, slowing as they get older. Japanese Maples are easy to care for and are very popular for bonsai. They perform well in containers and in the landscape. They are hardy, but grow best when planted in well-drained soil, and in a location protected from drying winds and where they will receive morning sun and afternoon shade. Sowing Acer palmatum Seeds: Japanese Maple seeds possess a thick, impermeable seed-coat which prevents or significantly retards germination. Scarification, cold stratification, and moisture enhance germination. Scarify: Soak in Hot water for 24 hours Stratify: Cold 120 days, 40 Degrees F Germination: Sow 1/4" Deep GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS SOAK SEEDS FOR 24-48 HOURS IN WATER. COLD STRATIFY FOR 90-120 DAYS. SOW 1/8-1/4 INCH IN WELL DRAINED MEDIUM. KEEP MOIST BUT NOT SOGGY. TOO MUCH WATER WILL ROT THE SEED OR SEEDLING. BURIED TOO DEEP AND THE SEEDLING WONT MAKE IT TO THE SURFACE.
