Oregano - 1/4 LB
USD 29.99

Origanum vulgare, or Oregano, is a must-have kitchen herb that can easily be grown from seed in the herb garden. It has a pungent aroma and is an essential herb for Italian, Greek and Mexican cooking. It is strong enough to flavor tomatoes, onion and garlic. Oregano is a bushy perennial that can reach 18 inches in height and width, and it has clusters of pinkish-purple colored flowers that last through the summer. Clip the leaves throughout the growing season to use fresh or to dry. To have the best flavor for drying, it is best to cut stems with flower heads just before they begin to bloom. Start Oregano directly outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Press the seed into the soil, cover it lightly with peat moss and keep it moist. With a temperature of 60 - 70F, germination is usually in 14 days. Oregano prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Measure rows of seed 18 - 24 inches apart and thin seedlings to 8 - 12 inches. Cutting the young plant back before it flowers will encourage a denser, compact growth habit. Oregano plants should be replaced every 3 - 4 years to keep the highest quality for harvesting.
