Easy to grow and easy to bloom, this Encyclia species produces very fragrant flowers -- (think intoxicating wisteria or wonderful rose.) The long, arching spikes get larger and more robust as the plant grows up. The flowers are a lovely purple and lavender in color, with an intoxicating fragrance. And there can be 20 to 30 flowers on a spike. A member of the cattleya family, these grow relatively fast to become large specimen plants. This is a large seedling, mounted on a cedar plank. It's near blooming size, which means we think it is likely to flower within the next 12 to 24 months. It is not in flower now. This species is native to areas that include southern Mexico through Central America, the West Indies, and into Colombia and Venezuela. They can be grown under intermediate to warm conditions either in a pot of well-drained medium or mounted. We have a number of these and we always ship the largest. Allow to dry completely between waterings. Morning sun and then bright shade. Fertilize weakly weekly. Mounted orchids need more frequent watering -- at least every other day, and daily in hot weather.
