Feather Reed Grass Karl Foerster: Karl Foerster creates a dramatic garden accent making it one of the all time favorites. (Calamagrostis acutiflora)
This ornamental grass is the answer to so many gardening dilemmas ? what to do about semi-shaded areas that need quick, easy mass coverage; what to plant in less-than-ideal soil from heavy clay to wet sand; and what to grow that requires almost no upkeep but looks its best from spring till frost!Overdam is a compact, beautifully variegated Feather Reed Grass with cream stripes on every long, slender, upright leaf. Reaching anywhere from 2 ½ to 3 feet tall and not quite as wide, it?s a handy size for a low hedge, accent, or large container subject. In early and midsummer, it sets lovely ivory blooms on tall, elegant stems just perfect for cutting. And even out of bloom, it adds light, airy color to any setting, showing off handsomely against dark green, purple, or even yellow-leaved plants exceptionally well. And although Overdam grows and blooms best in fertile, moist soil, it tolerates whatever your garden?s got, from dry to wet, sand to clay. No need to heavily amend the soil before planting Overdam ? it will flourish with very little attention from you! Just pamper it a bit the first season to get its root system established, and it will take over from there! This plant is also one of the tidiest grasses available. It is sterile, so it won?t set seed all over your garden ? no ?volunteers? to worry about popping up in the flower bed! Best in cool-summer climates, it tolerates any conditions other than extremely high humidity. Give it full sun to partial shade and let it show off! Zones 4-8.
