Is there a term for people that don't eat factory farm meat?
I'm having a lot of trouble explaining how I eat to some folks. I'm not a true vegetarian... I just don't eat meat that comes from factory farms which is EVERYTHING you could buy at a local supermarket or get from a restaurant. They seem to get offended or defensive even though I never push my views on anyone or even talk about it unless I'm asked. I still eat meat that's been hunted by family or that comes from a local farmer with sane, hormone and antibiotic free practices... but I'm having trouble summing this up for folks. Any ideas?
I don't define myself by what I eat... but when I'm in social situations the Michigan folk want to know why I'm not eating their burgers and ribs and I can't call myself a vegetarian. Sorry, I thought that was defined in my question.
Why do people think that locally raised or slaughtered meat is any better? Personally, the only additionally unsatisfying fact about factory farms is that they are unsanitary (to the max), inefficient, and harmful to the environment.
It is no less cruel or inhumane to slaughter it any other way. No matter how it dies, it dies prematurely by human hand. There is no such thing as humane slaughter. Humane means to be treated as a human-- and we don't slaughter humans just to consume their rotting flesh to fill our insatiable hunger. Then soon after we crap it out and it becomes a wasted life that was ended by savage men.
Sorry, I feel strongly about it. I guess it's better to not eat factory-farmed meat if you ARE going to continue to eat meat, but I'd just recommend that you become a vegan. I've never felt better and I eat a much wider variety of food now. Plus it's a commitment that I'm proud of and will always live for. I will not receive sustenance from death.
