Cosmos Bipinnatus

Cosmos Bipinnatus
Can annual Plants Live in the tropical weather?

Let's use the Cosmos Bipinnatus plant for example. It's an annual type so it dies during the winter due to the cold. But what if you take it to a tropical zone where it's warm all year long? Will the plant die in the "winter" or will it live for a bit longer and then eventually die?

Most annual plants senesce (die) automatically after producing seeds, and the only way to prevent death of many annuals is the cut off the flowers before they are fertilized and produce seeds. There is probably a limit how many times one can do this.

As for the Cosmos, I believe they are from warm areas (e.g., Mexico).

Cosmos Bipinnatus - Mix - 1 LB
USD 17.99

Cosmos seed is one of the easiest of all the flower seeds in the world to grow. Cosmos seed looks like miniature pine needles, which makes seeding simple. Just scatter the flower seed over freshly turned bare soil, and then compress the seed into the dirt. Do not cover cosmos seed more then 1/16 of an inch. Because cosmos is so easy to grow in the worst conditions spring and summer have to offer, it can be seeded in the spring for early summer bloom or in mid-summer for late summer blooms until frost season begins. Since cosmos flower seeds actually sprout faster in hot soils and the plant grows best in hot, dry summer temperatures, you can increase your plant population and bloom display by cutting back spring-planted cosmos. When you plant cosmos in the the spring and it begins to look as if there are an abundance of dried seed pods, do not remove the plants. You can encourage re-bloom simply by cutting the plants back to 12 - 18 inches high. Allow those flower seed pods to open and drop their flower seeds for even more cosmos flowers.

150 Seeds, Cosmos "Gloria" (Cosmos bipinnatus) Seeds By Seed Needs
USD 1.65

Cosmos is one of the easiest flower seeds to grow. Just direct sow in early spring after the danger of frost has passed. Seedlings are not winter hardy. Sow in full sun or very light shade to get the most out of your Cosmos seed. Prefers well drained soils so avoid heavy clay areas. You do not need to fertilize cosmos. This will just give you too much foliage and not enough flower. Rich, fertile soils tend to produce unusually tall, lanky plants with few blooms which causes the plants become top heavy and fall over. Cosmos can be a great cut flower with a vase life of 5-7 days. Harvest the blooms in the early morning hours, and select stems with flowers that have just opened. Remove the leaves below the water line. Generally trouble free, seldom falling prey to disease or insects, and they do not mind being crowded. Optimum sowing depth is approximately 1/16" with a soil temperature of 70 degrees.

150 Seeds, Cosmos "Purity" (Cosmos bipinnatus) Seeds By Seed Needs
USD 1.65

This variety of Cosmos is named "purity" due to its pure white flower. It is a well-named newer hybrid that selects the already-popular "great white" from the old mixtures, and presents it on a plant growing only 3 to 5 ft. tall. Extra-large, long-lasting flowers make this one a wonder for cutting. All cosmos are easy to grow from flower seed. Optimum sowing depth for cosmos flower seed is approximately 1/16" - 1/8" with a soil temperature of 70 degrees. If planting outdoors make sure frost season is completely over and night time temps are staying above 45 degrees consistent for good germination.

Cosmos Bipinnatus - Day Dream - 1000 Seeds
USD 4.99

Cosmos Bipinnatus Sensation (Day Dream) - This flower seed is one of the \new cosmos\" hybrids utilizing cosmos' classic pastel pink with all kinds of darker pink highlights added for extra zing. Centers remain vivid yellow, but each petal has a dark pink flare at the bottom, and dark pink veins all the way to the petal tips. Like all the other types of cosmos flowers, it is a snap to grow from seed. If you plant cosmos in the Spring after frost season you will have big blooms from midsummer right up until frost. The originals are wildflowers, of course, and are native to our own southwest and more commonly, Mexico. This tells you cosmos don't mind hot dry, conditions. In fact, some consider cosmos desert plants. But they're incredibly adaptable. And ever since some plant explorer gathered seeds from the rocky wilds of Mexico and transplanted them into \"good garden soil,\" the world has known that they not only thrive, but enjoy our loamy, well-watered gardens. And if they're not fertilized too much, they rapidly develop into large branching plants with deep green fern-like leaves."

Cosmos Bipinnatus - Picotee - 2000 Seeds
USD 8.99

Cosmos Bipinnatus Sensation (Picotee) - If you are a wildflower purist, then you might not want this hybrid Cosmos flower in your meadow; however, most home gardeners are delighted to have this beauty. Cosmos Picotee is a hybrid of wild cosmos that has beautiful red edges on each petal. Yes, it's just as easy to grow and just as much at home in meadows as its wild cousins of solid color. This cosmos is magnificent, both in the garden, or in a vase since cosmos also make great cutflowers. Be very careful about fertilizing cosmos, loose medium fertility soil is all that is needed for spectacular plants. Fertilizing often produces lush foliage but few flowers. Somewhat drought tolerant, but watering on a regular basis will produce better fuller plants. Attracts butterflies, perfect for the butterfly garden. Back of border, mass plantings or for humming bird gardens, absolutely anyone can grow cosmos with little effort. Optimum sowing depth for cosmos flower seed is approximately 1/16\ - 1/8\" with a soil temperature of 70 degrees."
