Venus Flytrap Carnivorous Plant 3 Inch Pot

Because insects are one of the most common prey items for most carnivorous plants, they are sometimes called insectivorous plants. It is not surprising that the most common habitat for these plants is in bogs and fens, where nutrient concentrations are low but water and sunshine seasonally abundant. As many as thirteen species of carnivorous plants have been found in a single bog (Folkerts, 1982). Most plants absorb nitrogen from the soil through their roots. But carnivorous plants absorb nitrogen from their animal prey through their leaves specially modified as traps. Nature provides this remarkable plant with "traps" to lure and capture it's food. The traps are covered inside by tiny hairs and a sticky sweet smelling substance attractive to insects. When an insect touches the trigger hair, the trap is activated and closes around it's victim. After digestion of it's meal (whick takes several days), the trap will open again for a new catch. PLANTING AND CARE:Keep moist at all times, rainwater or distilled water are preferred. Plants should not be fertilized (so therefore should be separated from your other plants). The insects it catches provide natural nourishment. Select a sunny window for your Venus Flytrap. In replanting only use sphagnum! Peat moss will do in a pinch. Put a plastic saucer underneath the plant to hold water and keep it's humidity proper but do not stand in a dish of water. Pitcher Purple Plant (Southern Variety) Nice Carnivorous Garden Plant 10 Seeds

Pitcher Hooded Plant (Sarracenia Minor) Nice Carnivorous Garden Plant 10 Seeds
USD 1.99 This carnivorous species actually traps insects as a source of additional nutrients! The leaves grow into almost perfectly cylindrical trumpets, that turn from light green to a reddish-brown towards the hood as the plant matures. The characteristic white spots are visible even on the juvenile foliage but become more prominent with maturity. The spots are caused by a lack of chlorophyll. The leaves range in sizes up to 3 feet in height. The top of the leaf is curved over the opening of the trap to form a hood, which gives the hooded pitcher plant its name. Under the hood are nectar glands which attract insects. When insects enter the opening of the trap, they are unable to turn back because of downward pointing hairs which direct them further into the trap. These insects are then digested by glands at the bottom of the trap. The flowers appear early in the growing season and are generally shorter than the foliage. Their narrow petals are commonly pale yellow in color, that spread outwards instead of hanging as in other species and are not fragrant. After being pollinated, seeds mature in approximately three months. These should be stored through the winter in a cool place preferable a refrigerator. In the spring the seeds should be sewn on the surface of damp peat. Germination occurs rapidly but young seedlings should not be allowed to dry out. These grow slowly and won't fully mature until the plant is approximately five years old. As with the other species of Sarracenia the plant may be reproduced by dividing the rhizome into segments.
