*25 CRIMSON BOTTLEBRUSH SEEDS * The Crimson Bottlebrush is an evergreen shrub or small tree. They make excellent and unique garden plants. Their bright showy red flower-spikes appear in summer and autumn and are made up of a number of individual flowers. The pollen of the flower forms on the tip of a long colored stalk called a filament. It is these filaments which give the flower spike its color and distinctive 'bottlebrush' shape. The flowers can be spectacular and are irresistible to nectar-feeding birds and insects. Most often grown as a shrub, Bottlebrush can be also be trained as a tree to 15 feet. It makes a nice screen or tall hedge. This fast growing variety is frost tolerant to a temperature of 20 F and is best grown outside in zones 9-11 and the warmer areas of zone 8. In colder climates they make for novelty potted plants that can easily be overwintered inside or in a greenhouse. Germination from seed is easy.

Weeping Bottlebrush Tree 50+ seeds USD 1.99
Callistemon Viminalis-The weeping bottlebrush is typically a small tree with pendulous foliage although some forms are more pendulous than others. It reaches a height of about 10 meters in its natural habitat but is usually smaller in cultivation, particularly in temperate areas where it is an attractive and reliable small tree for street planting. Once established, however, it is able to tolerate extended dry periods. The plant performs best in medium to heavy soils and can tolerate less than perfect drainage but may be damaged by moderate to heavy frost. It responds to annual fertilizing after flowering. Although the plant will respond to pruning, this can have the effect of destroying the appearance of weeping forms. In common with other bottlebrushes, plants flower best in a sunny location but they will tolerate considerable shade at the expense of flowering performance.

Bottlebrush Buckeye (Aesculus parviflora) Bottlebrush Buckeye is an outstanding Southern native (South Carolina to Alabama) that has found its way to gardens far north of its natural range. The individual flower is actually a small 4 petaled object with stamens stretching outward. Collectively these flowers are produced on 8-12 long, 2-4 wide panicles which resemble a Bottlebrush. The fragrance lends a hint of honeysuckle. The fruit is mature when the tan covering begins to split and inside is a brown to orange colored Buckeye. Most years seed is readily available. Bottlebrush in full sun grows as a mounded shrub. Plants in shade grow more upright. The dry, thin soil and open area they are located in may account for their restricted height. The foliage of Bottlebrush Buckeye is probably its most effective attribute. Dark green palmately compound (5-7 leaflets) leaves change to a yellow-green to an occasionally spectacular yellow in Autumn . Zone 4-9. These are seedlings in quart containers, only a few months old.

Callistemon "Captain Cook"-The cultivar is a form of Callistemon viminalis which is normally a small tree with a weeping habit. C."Captain Cook", on the other hand, is a dense, bushy shrub 1.5 to 2 m tall by a similar spread. It has narrow leaves 50-60 mm long and produces masses of red brushes in mid to late spring (October to November). Flowers may also appear in late summer and autumn. In common with many callistemons, C."Captain Cook" can tolerate less than perfect drainage but usually performs best in gardens with reasonable drainage and regular availability of water. It responds well to annual fertilizing after flowering and is not as sensitive as some other Australian plants to phosphorus. It will withstand at least moderate frost and flowers best in a sunny position. Seeds germinate easily.
