Passiflora caerulea, commonly known as the Blue Passion Flower is a vine native to South America (Argentina, Paraguay (where it is widely known as theMburucuyá in Guaraní) , Uruguay and Brazil). These names may also be applied to Passiflora edulis sometimes known as the passionfruit. It is popular with gardeners because of its intricate, scented flowers that have an almost plastic-looking appearance. This plant produces 3- to 4-inch-diameter, slightly scented flowers sporadically during summer, increasing in late summer through autumn. Intricate blossoms have an outer ruffle of petals and sepals; an inner disc of filaments composed of rings of blue, white and purple; and a central "antenna." Deeply lobed dark green leaves cover stems that grasp supports with tendrils. Blue passion flower can reach 10 feet tall in one season. The ovoid, orange-yellow fruit is edible. Care: Often grown as a houseplant, it can also be grown as an annual outdoors. Grow in a greenhouse border or in containers. Or set outdoors in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Shelter from cold, drying winds. Propagation: Semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Layer in spring or autumn. A woody vine capable of growing to 15-20 m high where supporting trees are available. The leaves are alternate, palmately five-lobed like a spread hand (sometimes three or seven lobes), 10-18 cm long and wide. The base of each leaf has a flagellate-twining tendril 5-10 cm long, which twines around supporting vegetation to hold the plant up. The flower is complex, about 10 cm in diameter, with the five sepals and petals similar in appearance, whitish in colour, surmounted by a corona of blue or violet filaments, then five greenish-yellowstamens and three purple stigmas.

It produces large 4 inch pale blue flowers and edible fruit. Passion Flower is native to Southern Brazil and Argentina and has become popular in the southern part of the United States. For gardeners living in colder climates, some choose to winter the plant indoors. In colder climates, it will drop its leaves but in semi-tropical areas it will be evergreen. Pruning it each year will help promote flowering. Passion Flower seed can be slow to germinate. Some people recommend soaking the seed in some Passion Flower juice as the acid helps break the shell of the seed. It is best to start the seed indoors in the late winter. Press the seed into the soil and cover with 1/4 inch of soil. With a temperature of 75F, germination normally occurs within 90 days. Harden off the seedling once it has 4 - 5 leaves. Transplant the young plants outdoors after danger of frost has passed, spacing the plants 18 inches apart. Grow in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Passion Flower needs to be well watered through the summer. It is best to water it deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth.
