USD 34.99

PLATYCODON: These balloon-shaped flowering plants are very easy to grow! Some varieties may need staking for support. Medium height plants produce sizeable blooms that start out as puffy buds that then open up into large flat five-petaled flowers. The most common color is a nice mid-blue, but there are also varieties with pink, rose or white blooms. Once established, Platycodon blooms early to mid-summer. Balloon Flower 'Sentimental Blue' (Platycodon grandiflorus) Great for the front of the border or for cutting! This Floriferous Dwarf has 3-inch Blooms on 6-inch Plants! Flowers are rich blue with darker blue veining. A breeding breakthrough, this dwarf strain retains the big blooms of its taller cousins with a compact, neat habit no more than 6 inches tall! Big blooms on small plants are most gardeners' joy, and Sentimental Blue does not disappoint--its star-shaped rich blue blooms have a darker veining and fresh green foliage that remains attractive even when not in bloom. Ideal for the front of the border, it is also very heat-tolerant, extending its bloom through the dog days of summer! Hydrangea serrata 'Blue Billow'
USD 18.00

JAPANESE MOUNTAIN HYDRANGEAS are hale and hardy. Bud hardy yet very feminine. High maintenance? Not these ladies. In 10 years they have bloomed every year for everyone I have planted. They remain dormant longer and avoid late frosts. Generally they are somewhat smaller than the H. macrophylla. H. serrata 'Blue Billow' Iridescent Blue. Outstanding. The best so far for outrageous color. Small in stature. Low and wide. 3-4''. Delicate lacecap blooms. Delightful under Oakleaf hydrangea. Acidify for best blue, unless you prefer lavender. Bud hardy. Full Shade to AM Sun. Our best seller. Like their 'French' cousins they like good drainage, good soil and water and fertilizer. But you don't have to hover over them. Just plant them well to begin with and water once a week. Give them acidity, (sulphur) for better blues and alkalinity, (lime) for more pinks. Don't trim them. Just cut yourself some bouquets. Do yourself a favor...grow some of these. You don't have 15 years to waste. Zone 6-10. These plants are still only quart size in spring 09.
